Anya Taylor-Joy on embracing her celebrity and use clothing as protection

Though Anya Taylor-Joy may be one of Hollywood's most stylish women, her ability to switch up her style hasn't always come naturally to her. She used to struggle to look put together in anything from backless leather Mugler to otherworldly Maison Margiela to fairytale Dior couture.

The 28-year-old, an ambassador for the upscale watch brand Jaeger-LeCoultre, is really a self-described tomboy who like to dress in loose, carefree ensembles that are very different from her impeccably styled premiere appearances.

In a silky deep voice, she tells Harper's Bazaar from her hotel room, "I was just unaware of fashion of a really long time." "I started working as an actor right away, so my main perspective on clothing was as a tool for developing a persona. Building this other person was the goal.

"I would really only wear sweatpants because I was getting picked up from work at three in the morning and then going home exhausted."

She says that the origins of fashion may be traced back to comfort. The actual red carpet event was really nerve-wracking for me. I discovered that when I focused on something more artistic, I was able to switch off the fear-mongering portion of my brain and become enthused about the situation instead. It does really feel somewhat armored.
