McQueen’s Gothic DNA Finds a New Light in Paris

Seán McGirr’s second collection as creative director of Alexander McQueen marked a sharp shift from his underground debut, taking place in the grand École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Inspired by Irish folklore, particularly the banshee—a female spirit said to foretell death—McGirr brought a gothic yet refined collection to life, blending McQueen’s dark DNA with his own vision.

Silhouettes featured sharp tailoring, washed and shredded silk dresses, and intricate details like hand-combed fabrics and frayed edges. While McGirr aims to maintain McQueen’s iconic themes, he also seeks to "let the light in" by incorporating more glamour and accessibility, appealing to younger, modern audiences. His challenge is balancing the label’s rich, audacious heritage with a fresh, commercial vision.
