Berlin Fashion Week Adopts Sustainability Standards Inspired by Copenhagen

Berlin Fashion Week is following in the footsteps of Copenhagen Fashion Week by introducing sustainability requirements for brands showcasing at the event starting from February 2026. Adapted to Berlin's core values of freedom, inclusion, and creativity, the guidelines aim to deepen diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI&B) standards while emphasizing transparency and traceability in product value chains.

The event organizer, Fashion Council Germany, believes that implementing these requirements will set a precedent for the industry and inspire positive change within the fashion community. A pilot program involving select brands will precede the full implementation, with Fashion Council Germany providing guidance and connections to organizations for support.

Copenhagen Fashion Week initiated sustainability requirements in 2020, later updating them to align with EU policies. The initiative has gained traction beyond Copenhagen, with other fashion events and organizations adopting similar standards. Collaboration between Berlin and Copenhagen signifies a shift towards industry-wide cooperation for sustainability.

Berlin's Senate Department for Economics, Energy, and Public Enterprises is investing €180,000 into Berlin Fashion Week until 2025 to facilitate the transition and uphold the city's position as a hub for responsible and innovative fashion. | BGNES
