Can the EU End the Era of Fast Fashion?

The European Union is taking bold steps to combat the fashion industry’s substantial environmental footprint, which accounts for about 20% of wastewater and 10% of greenhouse gas emissions globally. Recent EU recommendations aim to revolutionize the fashion sector by mandating more durable, repairable, and recyclable clothing while ensuring ethical production practices across the supply chain. Despite these efforts, fast fashion giants like Shein and H&M continue to thrive, suggesting that rapid, unsustainable consumption remains prevalent. MEP Delara Burkhardt emphasizes that consumer choices alone aren't enough to drive change; robust regulatory measures are essential to shift the industry towards more sustainable practices and curb the fast fashion model that exploits both people and the planet.
