Fashion Week gap chance for quality control

The co-founder of Māori fashion promoter Miromoda says the cancellation of this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week is an opportunity for designers to step back and look at the quality of their work, Waateanews reported.

Ata Te Kanawa says in the past the quality of some entrants, not just Maori, hasn’t been up to the standard which is why Miromoda switched to curating its showcase by invitation rather than competition.

She encourages young designers to get some form of tertiary training and to understand the bigger picture of the fashion industry.

“Most of (the designers) I don’t think will be too affected by the cancellation because they are online businesses anyway and they design a collection for NZ Fashion Week and they will be without that, the opportunity to show off their brand, but they also have the opportunity to consolidate and work on their quality,” Ms Te Kanawa says.

Fashion Week was scrapped after some major designers said they weren’t showing, which indicates how tough the market is currently. /BGNES
