How the Itamaracá Island Community Fuse Fashion and Sustainability

Through the Brazilian project led by Cabrochas, Sustainable Fashion Editorial of Sossego encouraged an artistic experience on Praia do Sossego, a tropical island and municipality in Pernambuco, Brazil, on the Atlantic Ocean. The outcome of this meeting between artisans and creative youth is powerful in an exclusive editorial, with the goal of empowering the community's intellect and fostering an intergenerational exchange.
Guest artisan and crocheter Maria de Fátima Nascimento emphasized how recycling art, particularly in a beach area where recycling is essential, empowers the community by turning waste into useful items. She revealed that the encounter improved her relationship with her employer by bringing praise and recognition for her work.

Guest artisan and crocheter Maria de Fátima Nascimento emphasized how recycling art, particularly in a beach area where recycling is essential, empowers the community by turning waste into useful items. She said that the experience improved her relationship with her family by bringing appreciation and recognition for her work. "People began to value my artisanal work and started to recognize me more," she said.
Visual artist Guilherme Silva said that the experience strengthened relationships with family and friends by encouraging reuse and creation of new things. The greatest obstacle, in his opinion, was the ongoing manual labor and network weaving, which reflected the loss of traditional knowledge. "Learning something new will always be challenging, and manual labor requires constant practice."

"I thought I could do anything! Realizing who I am and that I can come to terms with the fact that I am a strong Black person.”
Mariene Lima, a participant and the daughter of artisan Maria José, discussed the need of recycling for the community and how it inspired the locals to make their homes better in an effort to revitalize the fashion industry. "The hardest part is definitely coming up with something new in the fashion industry," she remarked.
"Today, I can only picture myself living in Praia do Sossego [Itamaracá Island]." It's a vibrant, beautiful place with an abundance of culture. I think it has the capacity to grow and reveal all of these attributes to anybody who is interested in learning more.
