Lantzville's sustainable fashion show will take the runway for a worthy cause

For individuals who like going secondhand stores and giving previously owned clothing a second chance, a unique fashion show fundraiser is coming to the mid-Island, reported NanaimoNewsNOW.

The Eco Elegance Fundraiser, being held in Lantzville on Saturday, June 8, is being held by Big Brother Big Sister of Central Vancouver Island (BBBSCVI). It gives thrift store shoppers the opportunity to bid on gently used clothing items that have been refashioned into new styles.

According to Kimberly Jackson, the communications manager at BBBSCVI, they will highlight apparel that is purchased from nearby thrift stores or local companies, producing updated, environmentally friendly attire.

"All of that eco-friendly, sustainable apparel is on display at our event. We will be showcasing a lot of clothing from our thrift store, which also funds our kid and youth mentoring programs, which is why that is our focus. We are a socially conscious thrift business.

The event is scheduled for June 8 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Superior Farms, located at 7995 Superior Rd. There will be a raffle with prizes totaling over $10,000.

Attendees will be treated to a fashion show with more than twenty pre-owned ensembles that are ready for the runway, modeled by a few frequent customers, members of the local community, and at least one employee.

Clothing is categorized into "work," "spring," and "evening" wear categories, with a vast array of sizes, designers, and brand names available.

From there, consumers will be able to place live bids on the entire ensembles, which also come with jewelry and additional accessories from their Big Deals Boutique on Northfield Road in Nanaimo, which specializes in sustainable fashion.

According to Jackson, this eco-fashion event was a "natural progression" for them because they promote sustainable methods through their second-hand goods sales.

"Our store is becoming busier and busier, so it's a great opportunity for us to highlight it and raise awareness about it. This will help our programs here by bringing in more funding and enabling us to give the kids we support more opportunities."

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the agency's 2030 Northfield Road office or on the BBBSCVI website.
