Since the establishment of the LAKAT brand, they have placed an emphasis on taking direct, sustainable action without compromising their aesthetic standards. They collaborate with a network of suppliers that includes family-run rubber farms, shoemakers, pineapple growers, and weavers in Kabankalan, Negros. Every individual engaged in the design process approaches their work with a profound sense of intention.
Because of this, the collaboration with the renowned design duo Nazareno/Lichauco represented an exciting advancement. According to LAKAT co-founder Michael Claparols, "N/L is in a league of their own when it comes to high-level design." "Their vision and values, particularly with regard to innovation, high design sense, and sustainable development goals, align with ours." The Nazareno/Lichauco and LAKAT teams worked for more than a year to refine their sustainable fashion designs.
They eventually reduced the number of designs they could choose from to just eight. In addition to being environmentally conscious, the sustainable fashion line showcases Filipino artistry by employing azo-free dyes on tropical fibers from the Philippines. "We wanted to play with colors, contrasts, and shapes since this is the first time we designed for a specific type of pineapple fiber," Nazareno/Lichauco said. "It was crucial to use azo-free dyes, especially in light of the need for us to consider the social impact of the products we design and purchase."
The resultant collection combines elements of wellness pursuits like camping by a lake or lounging on the beach with modern street style. Vibrant reds, purples, and pinks evoke the shady nuances of a sunset while adding pops of color.
The eco-friendly clothing line also includes designs that mimic ocean waves. The LAKAT team believes that this is in line with their sustainability objectives of promoting life below the surface as well as on land.
