Sustainable Style: Keep it stylish while being environmentally conscious

The social media advertisements touting the newest trend with an enticing price tag and an equally short lifespan are all very alluring.

Indulging in the newest trend of the day is made simple by fast fashion and online shopping. However, it's getting harder and harder to consume mindfully and intentionally, which eventually hurts both the environment and your pocketbook. However, it can be difficult to understand the idea and the glossary of eco-terms that go along with it (greenwashing, circular fashion, sustainable manufacturing, etc.).

So how can one maintain a stylish appearance while taking a cautious and ethical approach to consumerism? It's important to know where to shop and where to begin. We've put together a list of pointers, strategies, and things to watch out for based on our own experiences as well as advice from industry experts. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it can set you on the right track toward creating a more environmentally friendly closet.

Buy "pre-loved" products. This category covers vintage, consignment, resale, and thrifting. Every one has advantages and a different time commitment. Inventory for consignment and resale typically consists of a carefully chosen assortment of luxury or contemporary brands that are no more than a few years old. If you want to shop in a well-organized setting with reasonably new (and occasionally still-tag-attached) items, this is a good choice.
Thrifting is the way to go if you enjoy the excitement of the hunt. It takes time, and you might not find a treasure on every thrift store excursion, but it is well worth the effort when you do (I once scored a pair of Christian Louboutins for fifteen dollars—there are real gems out there!).

Is the thought of thrifting intimidating? As Secondhand Savvy's Ashley Snelgrove puts it on Instagram, "Start with accessories."
Searching for purses, shoes, and jewelry can be less intimidating and you can always find something that fits, regardless of your size. This year, I'm really into silk scarves and all the different ways I can wear them—in my hair, on bags, tied into blouses, and as belts. They give an air of refinement, and I enjoy experimenting with the deep hues of fall.
