'Updated' Version of Britney Spears's 2002 Versace Gown Worn by Blake Lively Debuts: 'I Like It Way Better'

Just a few days after Blake Lively restored it to prominence, Britney Spears is honoring one of her most famous looks!

On Tuesday, August 6, Lively, 36, made news when she showed up at the New York City premiere of her most recent movie, It Ends with Us, wearing an old Versace gown that the 42-year-old "Circus" singer had worn in 2002.

And there was no replica of the asymmetrical, sparkling garment. At the event, Lively exclusively told PEOPLE, "It's Britney's actual dress."

A few days later, the pop sensation seemed to approve of Lively's chic homage. The singer wore a similarly sparkling, albeit much shorter, dress in an Instagram post on Saturday, August 10. She wrote, "UPDATED VERSION OF MY 2002 VERSACE DRESS!!!"

The "Gimme More" singer danced to "Your Love" by The Outfield while accessorizing her "updated" outfit with delicate jewelry and nude pumps. This was in typical Spears way.

She captioned the photo of the minidress, saying, "I LIKE IT WAY BETTER." "EXPOSES MY LESIONS!!!

Lively stated that "it should be in the Smithsonian or the Met" when discussing the antique item with PEOPLE on Tuesday. Rather, she stated, "It's my fault." I'm quite fortunate."

The dress was the ideal choice for Lively's floral-themed ensemble for the It Ends with Us press tour, since it nodded to her character, Lily Bloom, who runs a flower store. The ensemble included vibrant, embroidered flowers around the waist.

She also mentioned that it was a clear reference to Spears, who is also included in the movie version of the novel. The star-studded soundtrack included an Ethel Cain cover of the pop star's song "Everytime," and Spears is given a special shout-out in the closing credits.

In an Instagram Stories post on Tuesday, Lively went into further detail on how Spears influenced her filmmaking and her choice to wear the Versace gown, along with a heartfelt message for the "Oops!...I Did It Again" singer.

In addition to a photo of Spears looking amazing in the Versace dress from 2002, the actress added, "Todays mood." The ultimate queen who inspired us all to shine, pen, and tell our tales.

"Britney, us millennials all have a story of a moment, or of years that you made us want to shine and inspire awe, with strength, and joy and immensely hard work," Lively went on. "Thank you for your example and your contribution to women telling their stories."
