Will fast fashion be outlawed in France?

A law that would criminalize ultra-fast fashion products was approved by the lower chamber of the French parliament in March, reported Pink News.

The measure intends to reduce the environmental impact of retailers like Shein and Temu by gradually raising penalties per item of apparel by 2030.

It will now go to the senate before perhaps becoming law, and it would also forbid advertising for quick fashion.

The bill states, according to CNN Style: "This evolution of the apparel sector towards ephemeral fashion, combining increased volumes and low prices, is influencing consumer buying habits by creating a constant need for renewal and buying impulses, which is not without consequences for the environment, society, and economy."

France's minister for ecological transition, Christophe Béchu, posted on X/Twitter, saying: "A bill to stop the growth of ultra-fast fashion has just been unanimously adopted by the National Assembly."

"I'm thrilled about this significant advancement. Thanks to the efforts of deputies from all political parties and French National Assembly deputy @AnneCecileVio, a significant step has been made today to lessen the textile industry's environmental impact./BGNES
