Australia Institute argues for regulations on fast fashion

The government of Australia has been urged to regulate the fast fashion business by the Australia Institute, a public policy think tank, since the nation's textile waste consumption nearly equals that of the United States, FashionUnited reported.

The director of the institute's Circular Economy and Waste program, Nina Gbor, emphasized the growing amount of waste that Australia's textile industry produces in a recent discussion paper titled "Textiles waste in Australia." The startling statistic in the research is that over 300,000 tonnes of garments are exported or disposed of in landfills in Australia annually.

This was later combined with fresh information from Australia's National Waste report, published in 2020–21, which revealed that the average Australian purchases 56 new articles of clothing year, making it the nation that consumes the most apparel globally per person, second only to the United States.

While the Australian Commonwealth has put out policies aimed at establishing a circular economy, Gbor and her co-writer Olivia Chollet of Anne Kantor Fellows noted that specific actions were necessary to successfully carry out such an endeavor. /BGNES
